First baseman Todd Sears drove in five runs as the Edmonton Trappers defeated the Sacramento River Cats 11-7 Friday night at Raley Field in Sacramento. The Trappers have won the first two games in this series, have been victorious in three consecutive contests and have won five of their last six games. In the process the club has moved 1½ games ahead of the second place Tacoma Rainiers in the North Division of the Pacific Coast League. Edmonton clubbed two home runs on Friday night and have now gone deep 131 times this season. Only the New York Yankees, who have homered 133 times, have hit more home runs than the Trappers. Edmonton and Sacramento continue this four-game set on Saturday night at Raley Field.
Jay Canizaro homered to leadoff the first inning, the third day in a row that Canizaro has gone deep. The lead didn't last for long though, as Esteban German hit his first home run of the season off Trapper starter Adam Johnson (7-5) in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one. The River Cats took the lead in the second inning with three runs off Johnson. Carlos Pena led off the inning with his 10th long ball of the season. With one out Cody McKay singled and Jose Flores advanced him to third with a two-out double. German then singled to drive in both runners and put Sacramento in front, 4-1. Edmonton reclaimed the lead with five runs in the third inning. Michael Ryan and Michael Cuddyer had back-to-back singles to get things rolling. Sears followed with a two-run double and Michael Restovich added an RBI single. Casey Blake closed out the scoring in the frame with a two-run homer, his 11th, off River Cats starter Larry Luebbers (6-7).
A four-run fourth inning gave the Trappers a commanding 10-4 lead. With one out and the bases loaded Sears delivered a two-run single down the left field line, scoring Canizaro and Ryan. Sears and Restovich would later score on an error by right fielder Larry Sutton to cap the scoring in the inning. Edmonton added a single run in the eighth inning off reliever Justin Duchscherer. Canizaro walked to lead off the frame and later scored on a two-out single by Sears. Micheal Nakamura took over for Johnson in the sixth inning and turned in three stellar innings of relief work before allowing three runs, two earned, in the bottom of the ninth inning.
