Montreal Alouettes News Release
Trois-Rivières - Vernon Adams Jr. is excited that he will take the field at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium this Friday, when the Alouettes host the Ottawa REDBLACKS, at 7 p.m.
"I'm thrilled about this challenge. I'm trying not to get too anxious, as I can't wait to put an Alouettes' uniform back on," he said following Monday's practice.
When the 29-year-old was laying down on the field last October 12, after being hit, a lot went through in his head. He was quietly reliving his career, from his debut with the Alouettes to his days in Saskatchewan and Hamilton, and his return to the nest, when he won the number one quarterback position.
The day after this game, he arrived at Olympic Stadium with a sling to support his shoulder, making his smile disappear. All this was happening so close to the playoffs. The Pasadena, CA native worked hard to come back. He started training in the gym as fast as he could. During that whole time, he never stopped cheering on his teammates from the sidelines.
Friday, when he will jump on the field, he will be thinking about his time in the gym, in physiotherapy, and his friends that supported him in these difficult times.
Last Saturday when the Alouettes were in Hamilton, he saw the team's four quarterbacks complete more than 75% of their passes. Alexander, Davis, Harris and Holmes all had a strong game. "I texted all of our guys to congratulate them. We have a good depth, and that's great, especially in our position."
Don't think that the former University of Oregon Duck sees these statistics and adds additional pressure on himself. "Quite honestly, I wanted them to have a good game. There's good chemistry between us. I know Trevor well, and I was happy for him and my other teammates. I am aware of my skills, and with all the work of the last few months, I will step on the field confident. I look forward to the first tackle and see how my body reacts".
Will we see the one we used to call "Big Play VA?" "Yes", without any hesitation laughed Vernon with a smile. See you Friday!
Great visit
Many youths from the Trois-Rivières area were in attendance for Monday's practice. Football players from the Séminaire Saint-Joseph and école secondaire des Pionniers, as well as the students from l'école Beauséjour cheered on the players throughout practice.
He said it
"I liked the intensity today at practice, especially after the game on Saturday. Rookies as well as veterans worked hard on the field. We can't wait for the game in front of our fans, on Friday."
-Kristian Matte, Offensive Line
Rapid fire
Limited during a good chunk of training camp, receiver Tyson Philpot was on fire during Monday's practice, as he caught many passes despite the defenders whose mandates were to cover him... The defensive backs still had a great day at the office during one-on-ones, as Debione Renfro, Robert Hayes Jr. and Prince Smith Jr. made interceptions... Régis Cibasu is more comfortable by the day since returning to the receiver position after playing at the fullback position last season. He scored a 70-yard touchdown on a Trevor Harris pass on Monday... Even though he was well covered by defenders, Kaion Julien-Grant made a few nice catches... Receiver Cole Spieker made another nice grab during practice, which seems to be happening daily since the team arrived in Trois-Rivières.
