Toyota Field Lines to be Painted Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (October 1, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions will paint the lines on the Toyota Field pitch pink for each October home match as part of multiple efforts to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All 13 fields at adjacent STAR (South Texas Area Regional) Soccer Complex will also have pink lines for the month of October.
"Breast cancer is a terrible disease that impacts many of our mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives," said team owner Gordon Hartman. "As many people know, my wife Maggie is a breast cancer survivor, so this is a personal matter for me. If even one person sees the pink lines at Toyota Field or STAR and decides to donate money for research, volunteers for a fundraiser, or reminds a loved one to get a mammogram, then it is well worth it."
The lines at Toyota Field will be painted pink on Friday, October 2, at 1:00pm and media are welcome to attend. The next evening, the Scorpions play the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers at 7:30pm.
In addition to the pink lines, the Scorpions will wear special pink jerseys for the October 24th match against the New York Cosmos. Following the game, the third annual Maggie's Wish Jersey Auction will take place with Scorpions players performing in various taped and live skits. Fans will have the opportunity to bid on the game-worn pink jerseys with all proceeds going to benefit ThriveWell Cancer Foundation. ThriveWell is a San Antonio-based organization that funds cancer research, provides support to patients battling the disease, and offers programs that help improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
"This is what Soccer for a Cause is all about," said team president and general manager Howard Cornfield. "We take every opportunity we can to give back to our community and particularly those who need our help the most. "
In 2010, Soccer for a Cause mobilized community support for pro soccer in San Antonio and this ultimately led to the establishment of the Scorpions franchise, the only one of its kind in professional sports. The Scorpions and Toyota Field - along with STAR Soccer Complex, with its 13 FIFA-sized fields for league and tournament play - commit all net profits to unique Morgan's Wonderland, a theme park designed with special-needs individuals in mind and built to be enjoyed by everyone. This helps the non-profit park meet its operating expenses as well as expand programs and services for the special-needs community.
Gordon Hartman, the driving force behind Soccer for a Cause, sold his homebuilding business in 2005 to devote - along with wife Maggie - time, vision and energy to philanthropic pursuits. Inspired by Morgan, their daughter with special needs, the Hartmans began with the construction of Morgan's Wonderland so people of all ages with and without disabilities can come together in an inclusive, safe, totally wheelchair-accessible theme park for fun and understanding.
Now in its sixth season, Morgan's Wonderland features more than 25 attractions including rides, playscapes and gardens spread out over 25 acres in what once was a limestone quarry. The park, which admits anyone with a cognitive or physical special need free of charge, has welcomed more than 500,000 guests from all 50 states and 54 other countries.
Morgan's Wonderland, Toyota Field, and STAR Soccer Complex are located in Northeast San Antonio at the intersection of Wurzbach Parkway and Thousand Oaks Drive, a half-mile west of IH 35.
