Tourists Avoid Sweep By The Gnats

SAVANNAH, GA – The Asheville Tourists (9-19) avoided a sweep tonight by defeating the Savannah Sand Gnats (12-14) 3-1 at Historic Grayson Stadium. Tourist starter Ubaldo Jimenez (2-1) picked up the win pitching five innings only allowing a run and struck out five. Jentry Beckstead collected his sixth save on the season. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. Sand Gnat starter Nick Long walked the first two Tourist hitters giving them runners on first and second. After getting Ashley Freeman to pop up to short stop and Trey George to fly out to center field, Long walked K.J. Hendricks to load the bases. Long would then hit Tourist second baseman Walkill Guance with a pitch scoring Bernie Gonzalez giving the Tourist a 1-0 lead. The next batter Jeff Salazar put another run across on a RBI single to left field increasing the Tourist lead to 2-0. The Sand Gnats put their only run of the night on the board in the bottom of the fourth coming on a RBI single by left fielder Chad Chop. The score would stay at 2-1 until the top of the sixth when Tourist catcher Garret Gentry hit his second home run of the year giving them the 3-1 advantage. For the Sand Gnats, Chop was 2 for 4 on the night with a RBI extending his hitting streak to seven games. Shortstop Marco Yepez was 2 for 4 with a triple. Gentry was 2 for 5 with a run scored, a homer, and one RBI for the Tourists. The Sand Gnats will begin a three game series against the Capital City Bombers tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. The first 1,000 guests through the gates will receive a Sand Gnats team photo courtesy of Memorial Health, Coke, Jeep, and The Fitness Club. Our Cinco de Mayo celebration will conclude Saturday with an assortment of food and beverage specials. Also, some guest will have a chance to win in the Amtrak Home Run Giant Trip Giveaway if a Sand Gnat player hits a home run.
