The Cleveland Barons, playing three games in three nights, lost two games to the Toledo IceDiggers and lost in overtime to the USA under 18 team.
Friday night, September 24th, the home town Toledo IceDiggers jumped out a 1-0 lead on a Eric Giosa goal at the 5:34 mark of the first period. The lead didn't for long as Barons forward Jake Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) scored his third goal of the year, unassisted, at the 6:31 mark to tie the score at one. The second period featured all of its scoring in the first four minutes of the period. Toledo forward Ross Enmark opened the scoring 2:01 into the second period. The Barons answered backed, as Nick Kosinski (Marquette, MI) scored his first Junior A goal at the 2:49 mark with the assists going to Kurt Kivisto (Brighton, MI) and Pat Schafer (Hilliard, OH). Barons forward Jake Coyle scored his second goal of the night and third of the year 54 seconds later to give the Barons a 3-2 lead, with the assists going to Jim Burichin (Strongsville, OH) and Matt Shouneyia ( Bloomfield Hills, MI). That would the last scoring for the Barons as the IceDiggers put up three goals, two from Paul Scallici and one from Steve Murphy to give Toledo a 5-3 win. Barons goalie Chris Carlson had 22 saves in the game.
Saturday night, September25th, the Barons played their home opener at the IceLand USA Arena in Strongsville , Ohio against the USA under 18 squad. Team USA came out flying as Nathan Gerbe and Jimmy Fraser scored in the first ten minutes to give Team USA a 2-0 lead. The Barons answered late in the period as defenseman Mike Kennedy (Lyons, IL) scored his first goal of the year at the 18:38 mark, the assists went to Eric Rex (Fairview, PA) and Jason Weeks (Seattle, WA). Barons forward Eric Rex tied the score at the 19:28 mark, with the assists going to Jason Weeks and Mike Kennedy, to end the period tied at two. The second period featured each team scoring a goal. The Barons Eric Rex scored his second of the night at the 11:53 mark, with the assists going to Mike Kennedy and Jake Holzemer (Toledo, OH). USA forward Jack Skille scored with 21 seconds left in the second period to knot the score at three. There was no scoring in the third period , which led into overtime when Team USA forward Chris Cahill scored at the 1:14 mark to give USA a 4-3 win. Barons goalie Blake MacNicol (Milan, OH), making his season debut had 29 saves in the contest.
Sunday afternoon, September 26th, the Barons had a return match with the IceDiggers at home. The Baron jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as Jacob Cepis (Parma, OH) scored his third goal of the year with the assist going to Patrick Goebel (Parma, OH) at the 4:50 mark. Eric Rex scored his third goal of the year at 12:48 with Jacob Cepis and Jason Weeks picking up the assists. The score held up half way through the second period when the IceDiggers forward Jim Kozlowski score to cut the lead to 2-1. Barons forward Kurt Kivisto gave the Barons a two goal lead back, scoring his first goal of the year, with the assists going to Nick Kosinski and Jesse Adair (Brampton, ONT). The Icediggers closed the score to 3-2 with Jim Kozlowski's second goal of the day to end the second period. In the third, the IceDiggers forwards Kaleigh Schrock, Dan Armijo and Jake Hovick scored to give Toledo a 5-3 lead. The Barons Nick Kosinski scored his second goal of the year late in the third period ,with Jim Burichin and Kurt Kivisto picking up the assists, making the final score 5-4. Barons goaltender Chris Carlson had 26 saves in the game.
