ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The United States National Team Development Program (NTDP) U-17 team dropped it first contest of the early season at the hands of the Toledo IceDiggers 5-3 on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, Ann Arbor, Mich. The U-17 club fell into a 5-1 abyss early into the third period before fighting back to within two with a pair of goals in the latter part of the final period.

Brian Strait (Waltham, Mass.) tallied the first goal, second on the season, for the U.S., after receiving the puck down center ice from Jim O'Brien (Maplewood, Minn.) who had collected a pass from Chris Atkinson (Sparta, N.J), ripping a shot past Toledo goaltender Justin Marriott (Ontario, Calif.).

Toledo, who had scored the opening goal of the game on a Ricardo Yesue (Allen Park, Mich.) tally, reeled of four straight goals after the Brian Strait score to push them to a four-point advantage.

O'Brien, who is tied with Bill Sweatt (Elburn, Ill.) for the U-17 scoring lead with three points, and Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y.), his first goal of the season, each scored in the second half of the third period to cut the Toledo lead in half. IceDigger goaltender Marriot would keep the U-17 team at bay in the final minutes to preserve the 5-3 win for Toledo.
