(Milwaukee, WI) Johnny Torres' goal in the 61st minute broke a 1-1 tie and propelled Milwaukee Wave United to a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers in an A-League contest Wednesday night (6/23) at Uihlein Soccer Park. A crowd of 1,131 saw Wave United raise its record to 2-7-1 (7 points) while the Western Conference leading Timbers fell to 8-4-0 (24 points). The Wave United victory, which ended Milwaukee's three-game losing streak, also evened the season series between the clubs at one game apiece.

Portland struck first as Byron Alvarez scored his sixth goal of the season in the 17th minute to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead. Alvarez collected a deflected clearance outside the penalty area before dribbling past three defenders to score on a left-footer from the middle from the middle of the area against Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin.

Milwaukee evened the score in the 38th minute on Chad Dombrowski's header from eight yards away off a corner kick by Torres. Torres scored the game-winner on a free kick just outside the penalty area when he curled in a 22-yard shot to the top right corner of the goal past Portland ‘keeper Bayard Elfvin.

Portland finished the match two men down when both Gavin Wilkinson (second yellow card) and Lee Morrison (red card for dissent) were ejected in the 81st and 82nd minutes, respectively. Milwaukee also finished a man down when Nino Marcantonio was excused in the 90th minute for drawing his second yellow card. Larkin posted the win with two saves while Elfvin, who was making his first start of the season, took the loss despite a fine performance in which he registered eight saves.
