New York Liberty News Release
NEW YORK - The Toronto Tempo have utilized their picks in the 2026 WNBA Expansion Draft to acquire the player contract of center Nyara Sabally and player rights to center Adja Kane from the New York Liberty.
"Saying goodbye to Nyara is extremely difficult, especially knowing the impact she has had within our organization and the lasting legacy she leaves with this franchise," said Jonathan Kolb, General Manager, New York Liberty. "From the moment she arrived in 2022, Nyara brought professionalism, humility, and a true teamfirst mindset, quickly becoming a valued part of our locker room and Liberty family. Her performance in Game 5 of the 2024 WNBA Finals will forever be part of Liberty history and was pivotal in delivering our first championship. We are grateful for everything she gave to this team and excited to see her step into an expanded role in the next chapter of her career with Toronto."
Sabally, a 6-5 center, was drafted by the Liberty with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft and averaged 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in 76 contests with New York (10 starts). The Berlin, Germany native also appeared in 14 postseason games for the Liberty, with averages of 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest. Sabally contributed a standout performance in Game 5 of the 2024 WNBA Finals recording 13 points and seven rebounds, shooting 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from the field, and adding a crucial steal in overtime of the Liberty's championship-clinching victory. The University of Oregon alum also represented Germany at the 2024 Paris Olympics and made 12 free throws on Aug. 7 against France to tie the record for most made free throws in a single Olympic game since 1988.
Kane, a 6-3 center, was selected by the New York Liberty with the No. 38 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. The Paris, France native spent the 2025-26 season with Landerneau Bretagne Basket in the French LFB, averaging 6.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in 19 regular-season contests. She also appeared in two French Cup games for Landerneau, averaging 2.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.
The Liberty begin their historic 30th season at Barclays Center with a preseason contest against the Indiana Fever on Saturday, April 25, followed by the team's home opener on Friday, May 8 vs. the Connecticut Sun.
