NEW YORK (Tuesday, June 9, 2015) - Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 14 of the 2015 MLS season.
Giovinco put in another stunning MVP performance, notching his second brace of the season in the Reds' 2-1 victory over Supporters' Shield leaders D.C. United at RFK Stadium on Saturday. The Italian international is the first player to win back-to-back Player of the Week honors in 2015, and did so in impressive fashion.
After defender Steve Birnbaum gave D.C. United the early lead in the sixth minute, Toronto leveled the score 28 minutes later with a bit of magic from Giovinco. The dynamic forward took on D.C. defender Sean Franklin on the left side and worked his way into the six-yard box with a nifty move. Giovinco then provided a beautiful finish from a tight angle at the near post to draw 1-1.
Giovinco went on to secure Toronto's third straight win in the 83rd minute with another breathtaking goal. Toronto midfielder Benoit Cheyrou picked up a turnover near the halfway line and played the ball to Jozy Altidore who dummied the pass, letting it find Giovinco. The "Atomic Ant" took two touches before blasting a long-range strike from 31-yards out that beat D.C. 'keeper Andrew Dykstra to the left corner.
Toronto FC returns to MLS action on Saturday. June 20 when it hosts Eastern Conference newcomers New York City FC at BMO field at 7:00 p.m. ET (MLS LIVE).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
