Toronto Coach Pat Quinn, Wichita Center Travis Clayton Join CHL All-Star Festivities
January 4, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Pat Quinn, Head Coach of the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, will be the special guest speaker at the 2005 Central Hockey League All-Star Game on Monday, January 10th, at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Quinn, who has coached the Maple Leafs for the last six years, was the head coach for the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team which captured the 2002 Olympic Gold Medal at the Salt Lake Games, and his past summer led Team Canada to the World Cup of Hockey championship.
Before being named head coach of the Maple Leafs, Quinn spent the previous 11 seasons at the helm of the Vancouver Canucks' hockey operation. Quinn has been selected as a head coach for the NHL All-Star game on four occasions (1981, 2000, 2002, and 2004), was named the Hockey News Coach of the Year on two occasions (1980, 1992) and the Hockey News Executive of the Year in 1992. Quinn was also named the Sporting News Coach of the Year in both 1980 and 1992, and also was a player in the "old" Central Hockey League, participating with Memphis and Tulsa in the late 1960's prior to a 606 playing career in the NHL with Toronto, Vancouver and Atlanta.
"We are very proud to welcome Pat Quinn as our keynote speaker for the 2005 Central Hockey League All-Star Banquet," CHL President Brad Treliving said. "He has experienced tremendous success at every level of the NHL as a player, Coach, General Manager and Team President in addition to his accomplished career on the International stage."
Also announced today was the addition of Wichita center Travis Clayton to the Northern Conference All-Star roster as a special "Presidential Selection". Clayton, co-leading the circuit with 51 points, has been exceptional as of late with 14 points in his last five games for the CHL-leading Thunder.
Northern Conference All-Star Coach Chris Stewart of the Colorado Eagles welcomed the addition of the veteran star. "Travis Clayton is enjoying an outstanding season, and has represented the Wichita Thunder and the Central Hockey League at an extremely high level throughout his career," said Stewart. "I look forward to working with Travis at the All-Star Game as I have always viewed him as Wichita's premier player."
