Tornado win third straight Newmarket Showcase

January 6, 2005 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Texas Tornado News Release

Another dominating performance at the Newmarket Hurricanes Showcase Tournament over the Christmas break has left the Canadian junior teams scratching their heads, while the Texas Tornado set another record. On way to their third straight title, the Texas Tornado became the first team in the 13-year history of the tournament to win three titles in a row, and join the Milton Merchants as the only three-time winners of the tournament.

In 18 total games at the tournament, the Tornado has never lost a game at the Showcase, posting an almost perfect 17-0-1 record in three years.

The trip to Canada over the break also allowed the Tornado players to spend time with their families, the majority of whom made the trip to Newmarket, Ontario to watch their sons play. The Tornado also made a trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, where they were able to see a new display with Texas Tornado items from last year's National Championship. Items included Brad Cooper's jersey, Scott Talbot's goalie gloves and a pair of scissors from trainer Mike Burns.

Nick Mazzolini and Karl Sellan led the entire Showcase tournament in scoring with 15 points each, while Tom Train was right behind them with 14 points. Sellan managed to score in every game but the final. Eric Elmblad, Josh Sorenson, Ryan Fuller, and Billy Skwarczewski all recorded their first career goals for Texas during the Showcase.
