South Georgia Tormenta FC News Release
STATESBORO, Ga. - Looking to stay within reach of a 2021 USL League One Playoffs spot, South Georgia Tormenta FC picked up an important point at home, playing to a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution II at Eagle Field from Erk Russell Park.
After Edward Kizza scored the go-ahead goal for New England in the 60th minute, Luca Mayr-Fälten hit a shot in from a tight angle to see Tormenta FC earn a point.
Azaad Liadi nearly had Tormenta FC out of the gates with a 1-0 lead, but his breakaway shot was fired just wide of the target in the second minute. The home side kept the pressure up, though, with Marco Micaletto combining with Luca Mayr-Fälten, who hit a strike on frame but right at the goalkeeper in the 24th minute. One minute later, Raheem Somersall nearly hit in a long-distance shot of his own.
Overall, Tormenta FC attempted 10 shots (three on target) throughout the first 45 minutes, but the two sides went into the halftime break level.
In the 53rd minute, Ricardo Gomez played a through ball into space for Rodney Michael, but his right-footed effort was pushed just wide of the post. Tormenta FC continued to pressure the New England back line but couldn't find the opener.
New England finally broke through in the 60th minute. Edward Kizza scored the go-ahead goal after Pablo Jara made a great diving save against a Connor Presley shot on goal.
Tormenta FC kept fighting, and in the 72nd minute, Rodney Michael played a ball into space for Mayr-Fälten, who blasted a shot between the goalkeeper's legs and into the goal. Despite a late surge of chances, Tormenta FC wasn't able to net a late game-winner.
Tormenta FC will close out the month with Community Appreciation Night on Saturday, Aug. 28, featuring the Dancing with the Statesboro Stars and benefitting Safe Haven, a local organization supporting those affected by domestic violence.
