WOODBRIDGE, VA (www.potomacnationals.com) - The Potomac Nationals have extended an invitation to Grace Meikle, one of the top spellers in the nation and northern Virginia eighth grader, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before a Potomac Nationals game on June 13 to which the speller has accepted.

Meikle participated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and made it to the fifth round where she stumbled over the word "khanate". The word means, "the land ruled by officials and dignitaries" in some Middle Eastern countries.

The eighth grade student from Bull Run Middle School earned the chance to participate in the national competition in Washington D. C. by winning the Prince William County Spelling Bee, which is co-sponsored by the Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger and the Bel Air Woman's Club.

Meikle finished in a tie for 30th with 15 others in the national competition that began with 274 spellers.
