Top Defender of the Month Honor Goes to Genoni Martinez

ST. LOUIS - This afternoon, the Major Indoor Soccer League announced that Steamers' defender Genoni Martinez has been awarded with the Defensive Player of the Month for the month of January. It is the first time a member of the St. Louis Steamers has been given the award this season. Ten different Steamers players have been awarded with a player of the week honor, but this is a first for this season.
Martinez, a 30 year old Mexico City native, scored six goals in seven games in January and added two assists as well. He had previously missed five games in December only to return on January 7th against the Philadelphia KiXX. In that game, Martinez scored two goals and had the two assists. He scored a goal in five of the seven games in the month.
Martinez can frequently be seen as the point man on restarts where he has flourished scoring three of his six goals on the restart this month. He also added some defensive work as well putting up three blocks in helping keep the Steamers opposition to only 5.02 goals a game while the offense scored 7.29 goals per. He has twice been named the MISL Defender of the Year and was an All-MISL First Team selection following the 2004-2005 season. His career in the League, which began in 1996, has now included 244 career games, 227 goals, 174 assists, and 393 blocks. So far this season he has scored six goals, six assists and five blocks in eleven games.
