AUSTIN, Texas (Monday, March 9, 2015) - The Austin Aztex have made former Aztex star Tony Rocha their latest signing for the 2015 USL PRO campaign. Rocha wore the Aztex colors since the team's 2012 PDL season. He brings valuable expertise onthe Aztex playing style on top of a successful soccer career that looks to take the next step in USL.
"Tony is a player I admire greatly from our time working together at the Aztex," Aztex Head Coach Paul Dalglish said. "We are delighted another top young player has trusted the Aztex to develop their game in these key developmental years."
Rocha, a 21-year-old midfielder, has been a dominant presence on the Aztex midfield since 2012, driving the ball to feed the forwards and becoming an offensive threat himself. Originally from Houston, the left-footed midfielder debuted in the PDL with the Aztex scoring three times in seven appearances. By 2013, Rocha became a regular starter and played in all 14 games, converting three goals on top of four assists, contributions that helped the Aztex win the PDL National Championship.
Last year, Rocha took the field eight times to find the net on three occasions and register two assists. As part of the Aztex, he earned PDL All-Southern Conference honors each of the last two years. Rocha played his collegiate career in Tulsa, where he recorded seven goals and 10 assists in 76 college appearances. After being named Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2011, Rocha led the Golden Hurricane to three straight conference championship appearances.
Rocha was selected in the 2015 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Sporting Kansas City with the 11th pick in the fourth round. Due to the selection Sporting KC retain first right of refusal on Rocha if he were to join MLS.
The addition of Tony Rocha sets the 2015 roster at 18 players.
The Austin Aztex kick off their inaugural 2015 season in USL with a home match versus the Colorado Springs Switchbacks on March 28 at House Park.
