Clearwater Threshers News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - Damek Tomscha and Zach Coppola led the charge with three hits each, as the Clearwater Threshers overtook the Tampa Yankees late to win 5-1 in the series opener at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Clearwater (13-6) broke a one-all tie in the eighth inning, putting up three runs against reliever Hobie Harris (1-2).

Both starting pitchers took charge early, though neither would factor in the decision.

Seranthony Dominguez permitted just one run in the start for Clearwater. Major League rehabber Didi Gregorius homered to right with one out in the first to put Tampa up, 1-0. Gregorius finished 2-for-3 as he works his way back from a spring shoulder injury.

Dominguez surrendered only three hits total, holding Tampa (8-11) to just the lone run. The Threshers right-hander walked two and struck out five, and boasts a 0.95 ERA through four appearances.

Clearwater bounced back to tie it in the second.

Deivi Grullon singled with one out, and moved to third on a soft grounder to second from Grenny Cumana. Coppola brought him home, lining a single to left-center to tie the game at one.

Albert Abreu held Clearwater scoreless through the remainder of his outing, going seven innings and allowing just a run on seven hits and two walks.

Still tied at one in the eighth, the Threshers greeted Harris with four-consecutive hits.

Tomscha kick-started the rally with a single to right, and Wilson Garcia pushed one fair inside the third base line for a double. With the infield drawn in, Jose Pujols hit a chopper past second baseman Nick Solak, scoring Tomscha with the go-ahead run.

A passed ball on catcher Sharif Othman brought home Garcia, before Grullon doubled up the first base line to score Pujols and make it 4-1 Threshers.

Austin Davis (2-0) faced the minimum in two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed a one-out single in the seventh, but got Jhalen Jackson to line into a double play to end the frame.

Clearwater added an extra run in the ninth. Mark Laird walked, and Herlis Rodriguez drove a deep fly to the warning track in right-center that hopped over the wall for a ground-rule double. Tomscha followed by knocking a single to left, scoring Laird with the fifth and final run.

Luke Leftwich finished it off with a scoreless ninth, sending the Threshers home with their league-high 13th victory,

The Threshers will look to take the series on Wednesday, when they send Jose Taveras (2-0) to the hill against Tampa's Domingo Acevedo (0-2). First pitch is at 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6:45 p.m.
