Tomlinson and Cole named Can-Am award winners for June

July 1, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Quebec OF Goefrey Tomlinson and Brockton LHP Joey Cole have been selected as the SLAM Baseball Can-Am League Batter and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for the month of June.

Tomlinson led the Capitales' league-best offense with a .392 average to go along with 22 RBI, 12 doubles, 32 runs scored and a .517 slugging percentage, while striking out only once all month, as Quebec went 16-9 in June. The St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, native currently leads the Can-Am with a .392 average (30 points higher than the second-place hitter, teammate Eddie Lantigua), is second in the league with 12 doubles, and is second with 32 runs scored.

Originally a fourth-round pick by Kansas City out of the University of Houston in the 1997 draft, Tomlinson, 28, spent four seasons in the Royals organization. After leading the Northwest League with a .338 average and a .440 on-base percentage in 1997, he advanced as high as AAA Omaha by 2000. Out of baseball for three years, he was signed by Quebec last season and hit .351 with 19 RBI and 37 runs scored in 42 games for the Capitales.

In 14 June appearances, Cole went 4-1 with four saves and an 0.54 ERA, shutting down Can-Am League hitters with 24 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings pitched. The 27-year-old lefthander is tied for the league lead with four wins and is fifth with four saves

The Nacogdoches, Texas, native was an 11th-round draft pick in the 1999 draft by the New York Mets out of Texas-Pan American University and spent six seasons in the Mets organization, including two stints at AAA Norfolk, in 2002 and 2004. This is Cole's first season in independent baseball.
