West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - For the fourth straight week, a West Michigan Whitecap was named a Midwest League Player of the Week. Infielder Roger Tomas won the award for the week of May 19-25 after three Whitecaps pitchers won the award the last three weeks.

Tomas hit .550 (11-for-20) with six runs scored and five RBI in six games last week, including two consecutive game-winning hits. On Thursday in South Bend, Tomas singled Kyle Peter home in the top of the ninth to give the Whitecaps a 5-4 lead. Tomas kicked off the homestand Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark with a bloop single to left that scored Casper Wells in the bottom of the ninth for a Whitecaps 3-2 victory over Dayton.

Tomas, a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, played four seasons at the University of Miami (FL) before being signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on June 18, 2007. The switch-hitting infielder made his professional debut last season with the Gulf Coast League Tigers, hitting .243 (27-for-111) with two home runs and 13 RBI in 32 games.

This was the fourth consecutive Whitecap to be named MWL Player of the Week award with LHP Jon Kibler winning the award on May 19, LHP Ramon Garcia on May 12 and RHP Alfredo Figaro on May 5. This is just the second time in Whitecaps history that they have won the Midwest League award four straight weeks dating back to 2000 when Tommy Marx, Calvin Chipperfield, Cody Ross and Neil Jenkins all won the award consecutively in June.
