
Tomahawks fall 2-1

The Johnstown Tomahawks lost important ground in the North Division race Friday night, falling 2-1 to the Michigan Warriors in the Tomahawks' first home game of 2014.
The Tomahawks struck first at 4:21 of the first period, as forward Josh Bowes caught a pass from winger Tyler Basham to the immediate left of Michigan goalie Trevor Gorsuch. Bowes slammed it past the netminder for his fourth goal of the season. Defenseman Jake Houston, playing in his first NAHL game, also assisted on the goal.
Johnstown held the lead until Michigan defensemen Joshua Shellman blasted a shot past Tomahawks goalie Alex Okicki's left pad with 2:48 remaining in the period. Shellman's goal was assisted by forward Jake Hopfner and forward TJ Stuntz.
The teams were scoreless in the second period, which was interrupted by an approximately 30-minute delay to repair a hole in the ice.
Michigan forward Jon Farkas claimed the 2-1 lead at 2:23 of the third period when he whipped a quick, sharp-angled wrist past Okicki. The Tomahawks responded with heavy pressure, outshooting Michigan 13 to 6 in the final frame, but were unable to tie the game.
The loss drops Johnstown to 22-17-2 and moves Michigan (18-12-8) into a tie for second-place at 46 points.
Johnstown was 0-for-4 on the powerplay, while Michigan had no powerplay attempts. Gorsuch stopped 28 of 29 shots for Michigan in the win. For Johnstown, Okicki stopped 20 of 22 shots. The two teams will play again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Cambria County War Memorial, completing the weekend series.
