Adirondack Phantoms News Release
The Adirondack Phantoms concluded their three game road trip with a frustrating 2-1 loss at the Admirals Wednesday night in Norfolk, Virginia. Adirondack blasted away for 33 shots on Norfolk goalie Dustin Tokarski but only Luke Pither's unassisted goal late in the 2nd made its way into the back of the net.
The Phantoms have dropped two straight on the heels of their three game win streak.
Adirondack had several close calls and good chances to equalize the game late in the third period but couldn't come up with the tying tally. Rob Bordson's shot off the post with a couple minutes left and Michael Ryan's drive deflected away off the edge of Tokarski's skate were two of the better opportunities.
Johan Backlund was solid in goal in his first start in the last six games despite taking the loss. He made several fine kick saves with his right leg to keep the Phantoms within range especially through the second and third periods.
Mattieu Roy scored early in the second period to give Norfolk a 1-0 lead and
Luke Pither picked off a puck on the Phantoms' side of the red-line late in the second period and sped into the Admirals zone. After carrying a backhand around a defenseman he put a forehand shot to the far post from the right-wing circle for his 9th goal of the year to give the Phantoms momentum heading into the second break.
The game was the last matchup of the season between the Phantoms and Admirals. Adirondack and Norfolk played each other only four times this year despite being in the same division. The Admirals are the AHL affiliate for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The loss is just the Phantoms fifth in regulation in their last 19 games since February 5 (9-5-5). The Phantoms are 18-12-8 since Joe Paterson took over as head coach on December 20. The Phantoms finished their road trip 1-2-0 after beginning the stretch with a 3-1 win at Toronto on Saturday.
Adirondack is beginning a busy schedule of six games in eight days heading to five different cities. Adirondack returns home Friday and Saturday against with back to back games against the Hershey Bears and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Call the Phantoms for tickets at (518) 480-3355.
Phantoms Notes: Matt Clackson squared off with Norfolk's James Wright for a fight in the first period. Scratches for the game included Matt Walker, Stefan Legein, Oliver Lauridsen and Logan Stephenson. Andrew Rowe returned to the Phantoms from Greenville (SC) of the ECHL and played in the game. Danny Syvret returned to the Phantoms from Philadelphia and also played. The Phantoms have just 11 games remaining this season including six at home.
