Milwaukee Mustangs News Release
The Milwaukee Iron have signed Todd Hammel to an af2 contract. He is expected to be in an Iron uniform on Saturday night in Albany, NY when the Iron battle the Firebirds at the Times Union Arena. Milwaukee football fans are more than a little familiar with Todd Hammel, who played with the Milwaukee Mustangs of the AFL from 1995 to 1999 and had his Mustangs jersey retired on opening night of the 2009 af2 season at the Bradley Center. Hammel's first year in the AFL was 1992 (Dallas). He threw his last AFL pass in 2006 (Colorado).
Hammel's career arena football stats are impressive, but it's the numbers you don't hear about that may surprise you. He has one career reception for nine yards (Houstaon 2001). He has 234 career rushes for 351 yards and has scored 64 rushing touchdowns (39 with the Mustangs). He has nine career tackles (3 with the Mustangs) and has attempted two field goals (both unsuccessful and both with Dallas in 1993).
Hammel was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 12th round of the 1990 NFL Draft. He was the 307th overall pick. Noteables taken after Hammel that year include Kerry Simien (Wide Receiver, A&M Kingsville), Major Harris (QB, West Virginia) and Matt Stover (Kicker, Lousiana Tech).
Hammel is one of the top AFL quarterbacks of all time. He teaches physical education at Coppell Middle School in Coppell, Texas, where he is the Head Coach of the 7th grade football team.
The Iron play at Albany on Saturday, May 30 (Time Warner Sports 32 tape delay) and return home Friday, June 5 vs. the Mahoning Valley Thunder (from Youngstown, Ohio) with a 7:05 kickoff at the Bradley Center. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster, the Bradley Center Box Office and mkeiron.com.
