Titans Sign All-Star Casey Powell
November 23, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Orlando Titans News Release
Orlando, Fla. (November 17) -- In working towards his pledge of bringing a championship caliber team to Orlando, team President Steve Donner announced today that the Titans have signed all-star forward and lacrosse legend Casey Powell to a contract for the 2010 season.
Powell, 33, led the New York Titans in scoring last year with 40 goals and 85 points, despite missing three of 16 regular season games. His 40 goals were a career high and ranked 5th in the National Lacrosse League, while his 85 points was 8th best in the league. In his seven NLL seasons, Powell has scored 176 goals and 258 assists in just 90 career games. His 4.82 points per game average ranks among the best in league history.
In the latest issue of Inside Lacrosse Magazine, Powell was the overwhelming choice for 2009 NLL Player of the Year honors. He is one of the few players to excel at both the indoor and outdoor professional games. In addition to being a six-time NLL All-Star and earning All-NLL honors three times, he is the all-time leading scorer in Major League Lacrosse - the outdoor professional league.
The Titans designated franchise player, Powell was one of the most decorated players in NCAA college lacrosse history. Powell was a four-time All-America selection at Syracuse, earning second-team honors as a freshman (attack) in 1995, while being named to the first team in 1996 (midfield), 1997 (attack) and 1998 (attack). Powell played in four final fours, helping the Orange to a national championship in 1995.
Powell was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team during all four years of his career. His career stats include 158 goals, 129 assists and 287 points. All three totals still rank in the all-time top 10 in Syracuse's storied lacrosse program. He was a two-time recipient as the Division 1 "National Player of the Year" award.
"Getting Casey signed for 2010 was top priority for the Orlando Titans," Donner said. "Not only is Casey widely considered one of the top five players in the NLL and one of the greatest lacrosse players in history, but he also is a great ambassador for the game. Without question, he will be the face of the Titans franchise and a wonderful community asset."
A two-time member and 2006 captain of the US National Lacrosse team, Powell was named to Inside Lacrosse magazine's All-Century team. Powell is also an outstanding lacrosse teacher and instructor. He is an owner/director of Powell Brothers Lacrosse Camps.
