Brockton, Mass. - Wellesley native Max Tishman (Wake Forest) was outstanding on the mound in his FCBL debut on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium as the Brockton Rox knocked off the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs, 6-2, to earn their first victory of the 2012 season.
Tishman (1-0) recorded seven strikeouts in five innings on the hill, while scattering just two runs on five hits and one walk in the win. Mike Spinosa (Bates) was tagged with the loss (0-1) after surrendering four runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Joe Gallub (Concordia) sparked the Brockton (1-1) offense in the third inning with a leadoff single to right field. Gallub quickly stole second base and then came around to score on an RBI single from Tanner Reibenspies (San Diego State) to put the Rox on the scoreboard for the first time all season. After Reibenspies was driven home on an RBI single from East Bridgewater's Greg Baggett (Bentley) to make it, 2-0, Scituate native Jordan Berry (George Washington) plated Norton's Sean Ryan (Wheaton), who reached on an infield single earlier in the inning, to give the Rox a 3-0 advantage.
The momentum carried into the fourth inning for Brockton as Gallub kick started the frame with a one-out triple to left field to spearhead the rally. After Reibenspies knocked in Gallub with another RBI single, Ryan gave the Rox a 6-0 lead as he followed with a two-run single that plated Reibenspies and Mansfield's Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt).
After Wachusett's Matt Lerner (Lafayette) opened the top of the fifth with a leadoff single, the Dirt Dawgs cut into their deficit as Connor McDavitt (Tufts) plated Lerner with an RBI single of his own to put the visitors on the board. Dan Gusovsky (Wheaton), who doubled off Tishman earlier in the frame, added the second run of the game for the Dirt Dawgs as he scored on an RBI groundout from Ysander Figueroa (Assumption).
With the Rox holding onto a 6-2 lead, Brockton's bullpen shut the door on Wachusett in the latter half of the game to preserve the victory. Frank Fantino (Southern New Hampshire), Westwood native John Sheehan (William & Mary), and Cohasset native Brendan Doonan (Rhode Island) stymied Wachusett (0-3) in relief of Tishman to close out the win. The trio combined to allow just three hits and two walks in four scoreless innings, while striking out five along the way.
Reibenspies led the Rox offense with a 3-for-5 performance at the dish. The slick-fielding second baseman registered two RBI, two runs, and a stolen base to go along with a trio of singles. Ryan went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base, while Gallub finshed 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Baggett and Berry both finished with a single and an RBI, while Mike Lupia (Indiana University of Pennsylvania), Luis Gonzalez (Concordia), and Cohasset native Rob McCunney (Fordham) each tallied their first hit in a Rox uniform.
McDavitt, Gusovsky, and Shane Keddy (Assumption) all finished with a pair of hits to pace the Dirt Dawgs offensively.
The Rox will head to Old Orchard Beach on Sunday for their first road game of the season. Brockton battles the Raging Tide at 1 p.m., while the Dirt Dawgs host the North Shore Navigators at 4:30 p.m.
