Timbers travel to face Sporting Kansas City in first road game of 2015 season presented by Simple
PORTLAND, Ore. - Following a 2-2 draw against defending MLS Cup-champion LA Galaxy, the Portland Timbers hit the road for the first time in the 2015 season presented by Simple to take on Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific). The match will be broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS with a local radio broadcast on 750/102.9 The Game and in Spanish on La GranD 1150 AM .
The Timbers enter Saturday's match undefeated in their last 10 games (5-0-5) against Western Conference opponents since Aug. 30, 2014, while Portland has scored 20 goals in those 10 matches. Sporting KC joins the Western Conference in 2015 following the addition of Orlando City SC and New York City FC to the MLS Eastern Conference. Portland (0-0-2, 2pts) is 2-1-0 against Sporting KC in all competitions at Sporting Park, including a 3-1 victory last year in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition.
The Timbers are 2-3-0 all-time in regular-season play against Sporting KC since 2011, including a regular-season mark of 1-1-0 on the road. Since the start of the 2013 season, Portland has recorded the highest road goal differential of any club in MLS (plus-6). The Timbers also have registered the fewest losses away from home with just 10 and an overall road record of 10-10-14 since 2013. The Timbers have finished with the second-most away goals in MLS in both 2013 (27) and 2014 (25).
Against the Galaxy, forward Fanendo Adi highlighted the Timbers offense, scoring a brace in the 2-2 draw at Providence Park. With his two goals, Adi recorded the fifth brace in his MLS career, bringing his goal total to 11 since joining the Timbers in May 2014. Darlington Nagbe, Rodney Wallace and Liam Ridgewell all provided assists in the match.
Sporting KC (0-1-1, 1pt) enters Saturday's match following a 3-1 road loss against FC Dallas on March 14 at Toyota Stadium. Midfielder Roger Espinoza recorded the team's only tally off a Graham Zusi corner kick in the 44th minute. Espinoza returned to Sporting KC this season after spending the past two years playing in England with Wigan Athletic. Sporting KC also added veteran goalkeeper Luis Marin to the lineup. The 31-year-old has started both games for Sporting KC after a 12-year professional career in his native Chile. Head coach Peter Vermes' side also returns 2014 leading scorer Dom Dwyer, who tallied 22 goals during the regular season last year.
Following Saturday's match, the Timbers continue on the road, taking on Cascadia-rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, March 28, at BC Place in Vancouver; kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (Pacific). The match against Whitecaps FC will be broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS with a local radio broadcast on 750/102.9 The Game and in Spanish on LaGranD 1150 AM.
