Portland Timbers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. ‚¬" The Portland Timbers play host to the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday at JELD-WEN Field in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match at 7:30 p.m. (PT) in the first of two matches this week for the club. Portland then plays host to the Philadelphia Union in a nationally televised match on FOX Soccer Friday at 7:30 p.m. (PT).

Tickets remain available for Tuesday ‚¬â„¢s matchup with San Jose and can be purchased through the JELD-WEN Field box office, area Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

Over the weekend, the Timbers (3-3-1, 10pts) opened a stretch of three matches in seven days with a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Real Salt Lake at JELD-WEN Field. Forward Kenny Cooper delivered the eventual game-winning goal in the first half and the Timbers picked up their first shutout in the club ‚¬â„¢s MLS history, also ending an 18-match unbeaten streak in league play for Real Salt Lake.

The Timbers and Earthquakes meet in the second of three rounds of MLS play-in matches in order to qualify for the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The winner of the Portland-San Jose matchup will advance to a third-round qualification match, playing host to the Chicago Fire for the opportunity to compete in the tournament proper.

Returning to league play Friday, the Timbers face the Union for the first time. Philadelphia (4-1-1, 13pts) recently captured a short-handed, 1-0 victory over the Earthquakes at PPL Park to extend its unbeaten run in league play to three games. The Union ranks second in the Eastern Conference and trail the New York Red Bulls by one point in the table.

With the win over Real Salt Lake, the Timbers wrapped up their April schedule with a record of 3-1-1 and currently sit in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas at 10 points.

Tuesday ‚¬â„¢s U.S. Open Cup play-in match will be broadcast live on Sportsradio 95.5 The Game and in Spanish on LA Pantera 940 AM, with a live video webstream available at www.portlandtimbers.com.
