Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release
TOWSON, Md. - Attackman Tim Goettelmann scored three goals and added two assists as the Long Island Lizards (2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 9-6 victory over the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Baltimore Bayhawks (2-4) in the lowest scoring game in Major League Lacrosse history at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University on Friday evening.
The 15 combined points eclipses the previous mark of 17, which was set two times. The Bayhawks defeated Rochester by a 10-7 margin on August 8, 2002 while the Rattlers earned a 9-8 overtime victory against Boston on August 4, 2001.
Baltimore jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game as midfielders Mike Mollot and Brendan Healy each scored unassisted tallies past goalkeeper Greg Cattrano. Goettelmann tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of goals within a two-minute span before attackman Mark Millon regained the Bayhawk advantage by converting a feed from rookie Matt Ward with 2:26 left in the first quarter.
After Goettelmann tied the game with his third goal at the 2:49 mark of the second quarter, midfielder Mark Frye gave Baltimore a 4-3 advantage with an unassisted goal. Long Island used back-to-back goals from midfielder Stephen Berger and Austin Garrison to take its first lead of the game, a 5-4 advantage with 4:35 left in the second quarter.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Mollot tied the game at 5-5 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter with an unassisted tally before Long Island scored four straight points to take a 9-5 advantage with 2:54 remaining. After midfielder Tim Byrnes scored at the 5:54 mark, midfielder Stephen Berger tallied a two-point goal, upping the Lizard cushion to 8-5. Midfielder Blake Miller registered an unassisted goal past rookie goalkeeper Greg Havalchak for the four-point advantage with just under three minutes left. Ward scored the final goal of the game with 17 seconds left, putting an end to the lowest scoring game in Bayhawks history.
Goettelmann led all players with five points, including his second hat trick of the season against the Bayhawks. In two games this season, the former Loyola College attackman scored six goals with five assists. Mollot scored two goals to lead Baltimore while Ward registered a goal and an assist.
Cattrano made 11 saves against his former team while Havalchak registered 16 saves in goal for the Bayhawks.
The Bayhawks travel to Rochester next Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in a rematch of last week's Baltimore victory while Long Island will take on Chicago next Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
