New York Lizards News Release
TOWSON, MD -- The Long Island Lizards defeated the Baltimore Bayhawks, 9-6, in front of 2,448 fans at Johnny Unitas Stadium on Friday evening. The game was the lowest scoring game in MLL history, as the Lizards defense held Baltimore to only one goal in the final 37 minutes of the game. Nicky Polanco was named Bud Light MVP, as he held Bayhawks star Mark Millon to only one goal (scored on the power-play).
Long Island led 5-4 at the half, and held that same lead after a rare scoreless third quarter. However, Mike Mollot scored for the Bayhawks to tie the game at 5-5.
Tim Byrnes scored his first career goal as a Lizard to make the score 6-5, but it would be Stephen Berger that delivered the dagger, blasting a two-point goal right off of the ensuing faceoff win.
Berger's goal proved to be the game-winner, as Greg Cattrano finished with 11 saves, allowing only six goals in a very strong performance.
Tim Goettelmann scored three goals and two assists, all in the first half, to lead the Lizards offense. Goettelmann had a hand in each of the first five goals, scoring the first three and assisting on the fourth and fifth.
The Lizards (2-4) meet the expansion Chicago Machine (0-5) next Saturday, July 1st.
