Albany Firebirds News Release
ALBANY, NY - The Albany Conquest announced today that tight end/offensive lineman Jacob Hobbs has rejoined the squad and has been activated from the exemption list after being released from his contract with the NFL's New York Giants on June 23rd.
Hobbs, 25, signed an NFL contract with the Giants following his participation in their Rookie/Free Agent Minicamp in early May. The Schenectady, NY native then joined the rest of the Giants roster for off-season workouts at their East Rutherford practice facility. After nearly two full months of training with the NFL squad, Hobbs was released from his contract on June 23, setting up the potential for his return to the Conquest.
"Although we are disappointed that things didn't work out with the Giants, I think Jacob's time with them was definitely beneficial," said Conquest Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Jeff Hoffman. "I believe that Jacob still has a very bright future ahead of him and we are thrilled that he's back here to help us with the final stretch of the season."
Hobbs (6'3", 303 lbs) made his af2 and Conquest debut at the beginning of the 2008 season and recorded three receptions for 32 yards in three games played, averaging 10.7 yards per catch. He was the first player from Albany to be signed by the Giants, where the team has held their annual training camp since 1996.
Hobbs was a three-year starter at left tackle for the University of Albany, where as a senior he earned Football Gazette Second-Team Mid-Major All-America honors and was named to the First-Team All-Northeast Conference. His first experience in the NFL came in May of 2007 when he signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and attended the Eagles 2007 training camp. Hobbs attended Schenectady High School and he earned Second-Team All-State honors as a senior defensive end.
The Conquest are on the road again in Week 16 as they look to keep this playoff hopes alive against the Louisville Fire. Kick off is scheduled for 7:05 pm on Saturday, July 12th at Freedom Hall in Kentucky. Albany's next home game is not until Week 17 as they host the Manchester Wolves for a 7:00 pm kick off on Friday, July 18th at the Times Union Center.
Group and individual game tickets are now on sale for the final two home games of the 2008 Albany Conquest regular season. For more information please contact the Conquest at (518) 487-2244 or online at www.albanyconquest.com.
