Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that 2019 National Hockey League Draft prospect Mads Sogaard of the Medicine Hat Tigers has been named the WHL Eli Wilson Goaltending Goaltender of the Week and league nominee for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending December 16, 2018.
Sogaard posted a pair of victories, a 1.50 goals-against-average, and stopped 85 of 88 shots for a 0.966 save percentage as the Tigers entered the holiday break with a 17-15-1-2 record, including a 7-3-0-0 record in their past 10 games.
His week began with a 36-save performance in a 4-2 win against the Kamloops Blazers Wednesday. Sogaard stopped all nine shots in the first, allowed a pair of goals in the second period, then stopped all 13 shots in the third to secure the victory. With Sogaard in net, the Blazers went 0/2 on the power play. He was subsequently named the second star of the game.
Friday, Sogaard turned in a career-high 49 saves in a 4-1 victory against the division-leading Red Deer Rebels. Sogaard stopped 15 shots in the first, allowing a single goal, then turned aside the 34 combined shots in the second and third period to lead the Tigers to an important road victory. With Sogaard between the pipes, the Rebels went 0/2 on the power play.
The 6-foot-7, 190-pound product of Aalborg, Denmark is posting strong numbers in his rookie season with a 10-4-1-2 record, 2.39 GAA, 0.931 SV%, and one shutout. The Tigers selected Sogaard in the first round, 32nd overall, at the 2018 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. Sogaard was one of seven WHL goaltenders named to the NHL Central Scouting's 'Players to Watch' list ahead of the 2019 NHL Draft. Sogaard was given a 'B' rating, which was only given to two other WHL goaltenders.
The Tigers will continue their three-game home stand Friday, December 28 (7:30 p.m. MT) when they play host to the Kootenay ICE at the Canalta Centre.
