
Tigers Outfielder Dirks To Drop Puck Tomorrow Night

Wichita, KS (January 28th) - The Wichita Thunder will close out its three-game home stand tomorrow night against the Rapid City Rush and will welcome former Wichita State Shocker and current Detroit Tigers outfielder Andy Dirks as he will take part in the ceremonial puck drop before the game.
Dirks, a native of Burrton, KS, attended Hutchinson Community College before moving on to Wichita State. He reached plenty of national attention with his streak of reaching base safely in 73 consecutive games and had a hitting streak of 29 games, which is the fourth-longest in Shocker history. He finished his senior season in 2008, hitting .388 with 11 homers and 26 steals. He was drafted in the eighth round by the Tigers and made is major league debut with the team in 2011. Last year, he was a vital part of their success as they reached the World Series.
Wichita is coming off an impressive weekend against the Denver Cutthroats. In two games, Wichita scored 14 goals and limited Denver to a mere 25 shots on net. The Thunder power play scored three times on Sunday. Matt Robinson and Greger Hanson recorded hat tricks and both had five-point games over the weekend. Torrie Jung earned his fourth-straight win to help the Thunder pull within two points of Allen for first place. Rapid City beat Allen on Friday night in overtime, 4-3, only to turn around the next night and fall to Fort Worth Saturday evening by the final of 3-2. Damian Surma leads the team in scoring with 35 points. Justin Sawyer leads the CHL in penalty minutes (173) and majors (21). The season-series is tied at three wins a-piece.
