Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Thunder's Offense Rolls- Too bad for the Denver Cutthroats (21-17-4) that they happened to roll through Wichita (25-14-3) this past weekend to catch the Thunder's offense clicking on all cylinders. Wichita outscored the Fish 14-1 in their two victories tallying seven goals in each win. Six Wichita forwards totaled four points or more in the weekend series with Greger Hanson and Matt Robinson leading the way with four goals and two assists each. Robinson scored five points in Sunday's 7-1 win and scored the game winning goal in both games earning him the Oakley CHL Player of the Week award. R.G. Flath and Neil Trimm each had five points and Ian Lowe and Matt Summers each had four points. Torrie Jung was in net for both wins and as a credit to the Thunder's defense, saw just 25 total shots in the two games combined (stopped 24 of them). The netminder is 12-4-0 on the season with two shutouts. Wichita is now just two points behind Allen for first place in the Berry Conference. The Thunder host the Rapid City Rush (19-17-5) on Tuesday night.
2.) Brahmas Best in January- With one day of games remaining in January, the Fort Worth Brahmas (23-14-4) are already assured of being the month's bets team with an 8-2-0 record and three more points than the second best team in the month (Bloomington, 6-3-1 and 13 points). The Brahmas have relied on the veteran one-two punch of John Snowden and Chad Woollard during the month as the duo ahs combined to score 18 goals with 14 assists and a combined +12 plus/minus rating. Snowden leads all skaters in the month with 12 goals (has scored in seven of the 10 games in the month). Rookie goalie Kristofer Westblom has been consistent in net winning seven of the eight games he played in January. On the season, Westblom is 14-5-2 with a league-best three shutouts. The Brahmas close out the month on Tuesday night in Allen against the first place Americans (25-8-5).
3.) Time in the AHL- The American Hockey League is on their All-Star break and several CHL players head into the break on successful runs in the top developmental league of the NHL. Allen forward Scotty Howes was leading the CHL in goals (21) at the time of his call-up to Springfield and with the Falcons he has scored goals in three straight games heading into the break. Denver Cutthroat forwards Dean Strong and Jamie MacQueen have been big contributors in Cleveland with the Lake Erie Monsters as Strong has four goals and seven assists in 23 games and MacQueen has two goals and an assist in 15 games. Also up with Lake Erie are Tulsa's Gary Steffes and Arizona's Matt Tassone (both have a point in seven games played). Wichita's Erick Lizon is still up with the Oklahoma City Barons recording 23 penalty minutes in 11 games.
By the Numbers
12: The number of consecutive road games the Denver Cutthroats will have played after Tuesday's game in Tulsa, the last of their more than month-long journey. Denver is 3-6-2 on their trip and are 21-17-4 on the season (tied for fourth in the Berry Conference). The Fish will see their home fans once again this weekend when Bloomington visits for games on Friday and Saturday.
One-Timers
-Fort Worth forward Chad Woollard's goal in Friday's game versus Bloomington moved the veteran into a tie for fifth on the league's all-time goals scored list (Luc Beausoleil) with 294 goals. Close behind is Rapid City's Scott Wray who netted two in Friday's win at Allen giving him 291 all-time goals (seventh all-time).
-Quad City goalie John Murray enjoyed his trip into Arizona this past weekend going 1-0-1 with his first shutout of the season to go along with 68 saves on 70 shots (.971 save %). Murray's only decision in Arizona last year was a 37 save shutout in November while playing with Rio Grande Valley.
-The lead for the Allen Americans in down to two points thanks to their 1-3-3 stretch over their last seven games. Allen's string of eight straight one-goal games came to an end on Saturday when Bloomington defeated them 5-2.
-The Missouri Mavericks signed NHL veteran defenseman Jed Ortmeyer last week who was +1 in the two Mavs games he played. The 34-year-old has played in 345 career NHL games including 35 last year with the Minnesota Wild.
-Wichita rookie forward Greger Hanson has five goals and two assists on his last three games and reached the 20 goal plateau this past weekend. The first-year player leads all rookies with 40 points (20-20@) and is tops among freshmen with six game winning goals and a +12 plus/minus rating.
