Tigers and Lake Monsters Split Doubleheader

BURLINGTON, VT- The Connecticut Tigers (3-7) lost game one of a doubleheader 9-7 before winning 6-2 over the Vermont Lake Monsters (6-4) in game two at Centennial Field on Wednesday night.

The Lake Monsters scored three runs in the first inning of game one. CF Brett Vertigan (1-3) singled and stole second base. 2B Chris Bostick (1-3) hit a double and Vertigan scored. RF John Wooten (3-4) followed with a two-run home run over the left field wall for a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers scored six runs in the third inning. 2B Jordan Dean (0-2) reached on an error and went to second base when CF Jake Stewart (1-3) walked. SS Jared Reaves (1-3) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. LF Danry Vasquez (0-3) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Dean.

DH Zach Kirksey (1-3) followed with a grand slam home run. The Tigers scored a run on a throwing error by Vermont RHP J.C. Menna to earn a 6-3 lead.

The Lake Monsters added single runs in the third and fourth innings. In the fourth inning SS Wilfredo Solano (1-3) led off with a double and went to third base on a groundout by 3B Chad Lewis (1-3). Solano scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-5.

Vermont tied the game in the sixth inning before the Tigers took a 7-6 lead in the sixth inning. C Wes Thigpen (1-3) singled and went to second base when Dean laid down a sacrifice bunt. Stewart grounded out to second base and Thigpen moved to third base. SS Jared Reaves (1-3) doubled to right field and Thigpen scored.

The Lake Monsters three runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-7 lead.

The Tigers scored two runs in the second inning of game two of a doubleheader. DH Zach Kirksey (1-3) singled and moved to second base on a wild pitch. 3B Brett Harrison (1-3) singled and Kirksey scored for a 1-0 lead. C Charlie Neal (1-1) walked and the Tigers executed a double steal. Just before Neal was thrown out at second base, Harrison scored to make it 2-0.

In the fifth inning the Tigers scored two more runs. Neal walked and went to second base on a groundout by 2B Carlos De Los Santos (0-3). SS Jared Reaves (2-4) hit an RBI single and Neal scored to make it 3-0.

LF Danry Vasquez (2-4) hit a triple and Reaves scored to make it 4-1.

The Tigers added two runs in the seventh inning to round out the scoring at 6-1.

TIGER TRACKS: The Connecticut Tigers made a bevy of roster moves before the game. The Tigers released OF Edwin Gomez and transferred IF Edgar Corcino to Low A West Michigan. RHP Bill Castillo was reinstated from the Disabled List and released. The Tigers added the 2012 9th round pick OF Jake Stewart and 2012 16th round LHP Josh Turley.

Stewart hit .294 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs in 48 games played for Stanford University. Turley was 9-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 110 innings for Baylor University this spring.

The Tigers start a three-game series with the Tri-City ValleyCats on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. LHP Jack Duffey (0-0, 1.59) gets the start for Connecticut against LHP Joe Bircher (0-0, 0.00) for Tri-City. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 p.m.
