Lakeland- The ThunderBolts defense was red hot Friday night, recording six sacks and posting a shutout of more than three quarters in a 61-20 in front of National Indoor Football fans at the Lakeland Center.
Coming off a bye week, the ThunderBolts showed some rust early in the game by allowing the Frenzy to score on their first three offensive drives.
However, Lakeland's Will Glover returned a kick-off 33 yards and just before he was tackled, pitched the ball to Kenny Perry, who ran the final 14 yards to give the ThunderBolts a 13-12 lead.
The defense recovered in the second quarter and held the Frenzy scoreless as Florida stalled out on its next two offensive drives.
Lakeland quarterback Jason Johnson received increased protection from this line and the offense quickly warmed up to tie the game at 20 after an eight-yard touchdown pass to Don Robinson with 13:18 remaining in the half.
Running back Perry Tisdale followed with two touchdown runs from 2 and 4 yards to give the ThunderBolts a 34-20 lead at the half.
The defense continued its domination in the third quarter. Linebacker Deaubrey Devine returned a fumble 39 yards to increase the lead to 51-20 after the Frenzy were driving deep in the ThunderBolts territory.
Lakeland 's most impressive play came from Brenden Givan on the next Frenzy drive when he forced a fumble on a sack, recovered it and ran five yards for a score. Givan finished with two sacks, while pressuring Frenzy quarterback most of the game. "He's dominant, totally dominant," said ThunderBolts head coach Teddy Keaton about Givan. "He comes in and works hard every day."
The ThunderBolts are at home again April 8 vs. Montgomery Maulers. Kick off is at 7pm at the Lakeland Center.
