Stockton Thunder News Release
Stockton, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's New York Islanders and AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, has completed a trade with the Toledo Walleye for forward Joey Martin. With the addition of Martin, the Thunder now has 29 players on its training camp roster.
The Thunder acquired Martin in exchange for the ECHL rights to forward Eric Hunter. The 5-11, 185-pound forward put up 16 goals and 29 assists (45 points) in 60 games with Toledo last year and has a total of 38 goals and 56 assists (94 points) in 123 games played over two ECHL seasons, both with the Walleye.
The Thorold, Ontario native has also appeared in 12 games in the AHL over the last two seasons with the Houston Aeros and Texas Stars. Martin turned pro in 2011-12 after playing four seasons with the University of Nebraska, Omaha (NCAA).
Eric Hunter played in 60 games last season with the Thunder where he posted 17 goals and 22 assists (39 points). The 6-1, 194-pound forward registered an additional 5 goals and 7 assists (12 points) in 22 playoff games, as he helped lead the Thunder to a Kelly Cup Finals appearance.
Hunter didn't stay with the Toledo Walleye for very long, as his ECHL rights were dealt to the Colorado Eagles later in the day in exchange for defenseman Russ Sinkewich.
The Stockton Thunder open the regular season at home for "Opening Night", with the unveiling of the Western Conference Championship banner on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. against the Colorado Eagles at Stockton Arena.
A two time recipient of the ECHL "Award of Excellence" and defending Western Conference Champion, the Thunder led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew over 200,000 fans for the eighth consecutive season in 2012-2013. Season Tickets and Mini Plans are on sale now.
