Daytona Beach Thunder News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Though fully intent on creating its own legacy, the Daytona Beach Thunder will take time to honor some of the gridiron greats of the Daytona Beach area during the American Indoor Football League team's inaugural 2006 season.
Seven "local legends" will be recognized during preseason activities at the Ocean Center. To be honored, a recipient must have played high school football in either Volusia or Flagler county and after the conclusion of his playing days, made a contribution to his community.
"As we begin a new era in Daytona Beach football, we also want to make that connection to a proud past,'' said Thunder owner/CEO Zack McDonald. "My brother and I watched some excellent football growing up and now that we own a team, we've come to fully appreciate the hard work and sacrifice that goes into being a successful player. It would not be right if we didn't honor our local legends."
The Thunder will convene a committee of current and former area high school, college coaches and athletic directors as well as media to produce a list of nominees and then the final seven selections. The general public can also make a nomination by sending an e-mail to locallegends@dbthunder.net.
"We will take the time to carefully review the list of nominees,'' McDonald said. "We'll make sure it's done right and those people will get the recognition they deserve."
