Thunder Will Make Most Of Cortez' Time

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Leon Bright doesn't expect Jesus Cortez to be around long, so let's make the most of the time the Daytona Beach Thunder's newest kicker stays with the team.
Cortez joined the team last week, notching a field goal and the World Indoor Football League's first road UNO by a visiting kicker. However, three bad snaps kept Cortez from being the difference maker in the Thunder's 46-39 loss to Columbus Lions.
This week may be another story.
"Jesus has one of the strongest legs I've ever seen," Bright said. "I really don't see him finishing the season here because an arena team or someone else will pick him up."
Cortez played his college ball at nearby Bethune-Cookman, finishing as the school's all-time leading scorer with 255 points, including 35 field goals. He also owns the school career PAT and single-season marks. He nailed four field goals over 50 yards during his stay.
Cortez is one of several new additions expected to see extended time Sunday against the Osceola Ghostriders. Lindenwood products Steven Kennedy - who played high school at nearby Spruce Creek -- and Dino Morales have shored up the Thunder defense.
Bo Bartik WILL return at quarterback this weekend, and will be on the opposite side with former favorite target Gerald Gales, now with the Ghostriders. The two spent the past two seasons with the Rome Renegades, who advanced to the championship game in both the National Indoor Football League and the American Indoor Football League.
