Portland Thunder News Release
PORTLAND, OR - The Portland Thunder announced today that the franchise will be holding an open tryout at the Moda Center beginning at noon on Thursday, December 19th. All potential prospects are invited to showcase their skills and athletic ability through combine-style testing. All tryout participants receive a free t-shirt and pair of tickets to Portland's season opener against the San Jose SaberCats on March 17th.
Head Coach Matthew Sauk and his staff will be on hand to evaluate all participants. Prospects will be tested in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle and three-cone drill. All potential quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs, offensive linemen, defensive linemen and linebackers are invited to try out for the team.
"Open tryouts give a wide range of players a rare opportunity to put their talent on display," said Head Coach Matthew Sauk. "Over the years, we've signed a number of players at open tryouts who have gone on to earn starting roles and become key contributors. If you've ever wondered if you have what it takes to compete in professional football, I would encourage you to attend."
The cost of the open tryout is $75 for those who pre-register with payment online (http://bit.ly/PDXTryForm) before December 18th or $100 at the door on the day of the event. Participants are required to sign a "Waiver & Release" form at the time of the tryout (provided by team). The surface at the venue is Astroturf - participants should wear appropriate shoes (no cleats) and workout attire.
Over the 26-year history of the Arena Football League, many AFL players have been discovered during open tryouts. The ultimate goal of the organization is to find that diamond in the rough. While there is no requirement to have football experience, it is strongly encouraged.
