Thunder sneak past Riptide

Rockford Thunder News Release

The Thunder (9-10) got multiple-hit games from Kristen Zaleski, Audrey Rendon and Tonya Callahan Friday en route to a one-run victory over the homestanding New England Riptide (8-11). Allison Kime (3-2) threw a complete game two-hitter to earn the win for Rockford.

The Thunder got production from all around the batting order, which included starts by Lindsay Gardner and Jamie Davison, the opening day middle infield starters who have both battled injury issues in 2008. Gardner appeared Thursday in her first game in almost a week, and Davison has seen little action since her injury sustained in 2008's opening series against the Chicago Bandits. Davison's return to shortstop allowed Rendon to return to her natural position at third base.

New England led off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with their lone run. The Thunder fought right back in the top of the fifth when catcher Stephanie Fischer hit a leadoff double. She was driven in with two outs by Rendon's league-leading second triple of the season.

The Thunder took the lead in the top of the sixth, as Shanna Diller led off the inning with a double. Diller was eventually driven in by a Callahan double to right-center field.

The close win helped Rockford get off of a recent funk that included a series loss against Team Canada last weekend.

The Thunder will try for a series tie on Saturday against New England at 6:05 pm Central time. Megan Brown will take the mound with her 2.37 ERA, good for third in the NPF standings. After Saturday, the team will take a week and a half off before visiting first-place Philadelphia for a four-game set.
