Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS- The Wichita Thunder announced today the return of defenseman Andrew Martens, as well as the addition of rugged forward Erick Lizon for the 2011-12 season.
Martens, the recipient of the 2011 CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman Award, returns for a second season with the Thunder after compiling career-bests last season for goals (15), assists (39) and points (54). He finished second among all CHL defensemen in scoring last season and was called-up to the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters following the CHL playoffs, where he played in one game.
In six pro seasons, Martens has amassed 42 goals and 203 points in 360 career games. Prior to turning pro, Martens played college hockey at Bemidji State University in Minnesota.
A sixth-year pro out of Kitchener, Ontario, Lizon spent last season with the ECHL's Bakersfield Condors, notching seven points and 208 penalty minutes. The 6-4, 235-pound Lizon also appeared in eight games for the AHL's Worcester Sharks, picking up 24 penalty minutes.
This will be Lizon's third stint in the CHL, having played for the Oklahoma City Blazers in 2007-08 and the Laredo Bucks in 2008-09. Prior to joining the Thunder, Lizon will attend training camp with the AHL's St. John's IceCaps - the new affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets.
The Thunder will begin play in their 20th season in the CHL starting this October. For season ticket information call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL or visit us online at www.wichitathunder.com .
