Thunder Make Moves To Pitching Staff

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Class AA Affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced today that RHP Kevin Whelan has been transferred to the Tampa Yankees (A) of the Florida State League and that RHP Tim Lavigne will rejoin the club from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA) of the International League.

Whelan, acquired in the Gary Sheffield trade with the Detroit Tigers in the off-season, has a 3-0 record with four saves and a 2.90 ERA for the Thunder in 2007. But Whelan has issued 25 walks in 31 innings of work, including 12 walks in his last six outings (9 1/3 innings). Last season, Whelan posted 27 saves with a 4-1 record and a 2.67 ERA for Lakeland (A) of the Florida State League. He was drafted by the Tigers in the 2005 June Draft.

Lavigne, signed by the Yankees in early May, is making his second trip through Trenton. He made three starts during May with a 1.13 ERA. Lavigne did not earn a decision in any of the starts. He has also appeared in two games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, one relief appearance on May 16 (1.2 IP, 0 R) and one start on June 6th (5.2 IP, 5 R, 9 H). Lavigne was originally drafted by the N.Y. Mets in the 2000 June Draft (Univ. of Virginia).
