FLINT, Mich. - Brian Smolinski scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Flint Generals to a 6-4 International Hockey League victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder at Perani Arena on Tuesday.
The loss dropped the PrairieThunder to 30-29-4-5 (69 points). Flint moved to 28-31-3-4 and within six points of Bloomington for the fourth and final spot in the postseason playoffs. The Generals have 63 points. The PrairieThunder returns to action Friday at home against league-leading Muskegon at 7:05 p.m.
The Generals owned a 3-1 advantage after the first period on goals by Mike Olynyk, Smolinski and Dan Lapointe. Olynyk's goal came at the 13:17 mark with an assist to Pascal Rheaume. Smolinski then scored two minutes later on an assist by Steve Silver and John Mori.
Bloomington cut the deficit in half when Bill Bagron scored on a rebound shot off the stick of Brett Holmberg. Robin Gomez also had an assist at the 6:35 mark. Lapointe completed the first period scoring with 1:49 remaining off assists by Brandon Gentile and Tyler Howells.
Flint increased the lead to 6-3 after two periods on goals by Smolinski, Chris Bogas and John Ronan. Smolinski scored the first goal of the period with 17:26 remaining on assists by Jamie Schaafsma and Mori.
The PrairieThunder answered 10 seconds later on John Snowden's goal off a Jon Booras assist. But Flint countered four minutes later on Bogus' goal with assists to Smolinski and Schaafsma. Ronan's goal at the 12:28 mark gave Flint a 6-2 advantage.
Gomez scored the PrairieThunder's third goal with 11:43 remaining on assists by Jamie Carroll and Zac Pearson. Snowden scored the only goal in the third period at the 12:15 mark with assists to Preston Briggs and Booras.
Andrew Martin took the loss in net, stopping 12 of 16 shots before being replaced by Sebastian Dahm in the second period. Dahm stopped 17 of 19 shots.
