CLEARWATER - The Clearwater Threshers got blasted 9-4 by the St. Lucie Mets Monday in front of 1,459 fans at Bright House Field.

The Threshers (33-29) lost one game from their elimination number behind the Dunedin Blue Jays, as they were outclassed by the visiting Mets (32-29). Clearwater left the bases loaded twice in the loss.

St. Lucie opened things up in a big way in the top of the first inning, as Threshers starter Perci Garner (5-1) followed back-to-back leadoff walks by surrendering a two-run triple to T.J. Rivera. Aderlin Rodriguez singled home Rivera, and later scored on a wild pitch with Dimas Ponce at the plate to give St. Lucie a 4-0 lead.

Clearwater got on the board in the bottom of the second against Mets starter Noah Syndergaard (3-3). The righty fell behind 2-0 to leadoff man and third baseman Maikel Franco before Franco smashed his 12th homer of the year to left field, making it a 4-1 ballgame.

The Mets tacked on a couple of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Charley Thurber led off with a single and Albert Cordero reached on an error by shortstop Jose Mojica, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Ponce bounced one to Alonso at short, but his throw to second drew Mojica off the bag. The throw on to first retired Ponce, but left Thurber at third and Cordero at second for Gilbert Gomez, who singled the runners home to make it 6-1.

The Threshers inched closer in the bottom of the frame. After left fielder Peter Lavin laced a one-out single and center fielder Aaron Altherr flew out to deep right field, right fielder Kelly Dugan pounded a full-count offering from Syndergaard over the right field wall for a two-run blast (his seventh of the year). The round-tripper cut St. Lucie's lead to 6-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Threshers made a little more noise. First baseman Chris Serritella led off with a single, and moved to second when Alonso worked a walk. Syndergaard was pulled for southpaw reliever Jim Fuller, who fanned catcher Logan Moore and got Mojica to fly out to right. However, Lavin earned a walk to load the bases for Altherr, who drew his own free pass to score Serritella from third. Dugan came up with the bases loaded, but flew out to left to end the frame with Clearwater trailing 6-4.

St. Lucie put more breathing room on the board in the top of the ninth against Threshers reliever Ryan O'Sullivan. Rivera drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single from Rodriguez. O'Sullivan then bounced a wild pitch, allowing the runners to advance to second and third. Dustin Lawley hit a bouncer to short, and Mojica fired home too late to catch Rivera, who scored on the play. Thurber then singled home Rodriguez and Cordero did the same for Lawley, making it 9-4 for the Mets. The Threshers loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Franco grounded out to third to end it.

Garner took his first loss of the year, allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits and a season-high five walks. He struck out four and dealt a wild pitch. Jordan Guth tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, fanning four and giving up one hit. Colby Shreve threw a shutout frame with one hit allowed. O'Sullivan surrendered three runs on three hits and a walk in his lone inning of action.

Syndergaard earned the win, with four runs allowed on six hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out five and gave up two homers. Fuller walked two and struck out one, but didn't allow any runs of his own in his lone inning. Randy Fontanez struck out one in the eighth, dealing a wild pitch but not giving up any runs. TJ Chism surrendered two hits and a walk in the ninth without allowing a run, fanning one.
