North Adams SteepleCats News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Highlighted by three former members of the North Adams SteepleCats among its ranks, 85 NECBL alumni were selected in the 2012 MLB Draft, the NECBL announced Tuesday.

Among the three SteepleCats selected were two members of the Western Division Champion 2010 North Adams squad, as well as one member of last year's SteepleCats team.

Leading the way and representing the highest player drafted among SteepleCats alumni was 2010 member Tyler DeLoach. The southpaw out of UNC Wilmington was taken in the 26th round - 807th overall - by the Angels. He appeared in nine games, making one start, for the SteepleCats two summers ago, posting a 3.46 ERA in 13 innings of work.

Another member of the 2010 team, right-handed hitting catcher Sam Mulroy out of Princeton University was selected in the 33rd round - 1017th overall - and will be joining DeLoach in the Angels organization. In seven games with the SteepleCats in 2010, Mulroy collected seven hits with two doubles and two RBI. Those two players helped the organization to a franchise-best 26 wins and its first Western Division title during that 2010 season.

Finally, the last SteepleCats representative, outfielder Justin Leeson was picked by the Royals in the 38th round - 1,183th overall - to round out the trio of players. Leeson appeared in 35 games last summer and posted 24 hits with 10 runs scored and added five extra-base blasts and knocked in seven runs.

85 NECBL alumni were selected in the MLB Draft overall, as Stanford right-handed pitcher Mark Appel, a 2010 Newport Gull, led the alumni when the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him eighth overall. The Boston Red Sox selected Appel's Gull teammate, Monmouth righty Pat Light, in the supplemental first round. Appel and Light became the seventh and eighth NECBL products to be chosen in the first round within the last five years.

Scribner recalled to A's

Oakland A's reliever and 2005 SteepleCats right-hander Evan Scribner is back in the Bigs after being recalled from the minors last Wednesday. After an impressive career at little-known Central Connecticut State, Scribner broke into the Major League circuit last season with the San Diego Padres. He made 10 relief appearances for the Padres last year and struck out 10 batters over 14 innings of action.
