Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City, IA - The Sioux City Explorers have announced the addition of three rookies to the spring training roster for 2002. Todd Santore, Lance Woodcock and Jonah Martin will be in camp on May 10th for the first day of spring training.
With the signing of the three rookies, the number of signed players grows to twenty-three as the X's prepare to open camp on Friday, May 10th. The Explorers will announce their entire spring training roster on Thursday, May 9th.
Santore is a catcher who joins the X's after finishing up his eligibility with Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. Santore's name is scattered throughout the Youngstown State record book as he ranks in the top five in several career and season catagories. The categories that stand out are his 47 career doubles and 50 runs batted in during the 2001 season. Santore was second on his team last season with a .366 batting average and was also named to First-Team All Conference in his junior and senior seasons.
Martin comes to the Explorers after playing the past two seasons at Arizona State University. During his time with the Sun Devils, Martin enjoyed his best performance during his senior season. In 2001 he batted .330 while playing in the outfield. In the 35 games that Jonaha started, he had 35 hits, six doubles and drove in 20 runs. He also had 10 stolen bases and carried a lofty .497 on base percentage.
Woodcock will join the X's as an infielder and will provide valuable depth to one of the best fielding teams in the Northern League. Woodcock is a right-hander whose natural position is shortstop. Woodcock did play one season with a high profile Division 1 team in 2000 when he played for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Following his time with the Red Raiders, Lance went on to play with Mahoning Valley in the New York-Penn League.
