Three Marlins Selected to CPL East All-Star Team

July 4, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.- Pitcher Cal Quantrill, shortstop Kyle Carroll and third baseman Johnny Caputo have been selected to represent the Morehead City Marlins and the CPL East in the 17th annual Coastal Plain League All-Star game.

Both Quantrill and Caputo were voted on by the team vote, which was comprised of votes from each team's head coach, broadcaster and a media representative. Carroll was voted on by the fans on the Final Vote poll, finishing with 854 votes in 24 hours - the most of all ten players on the Final Vote ballot.

Carroll will be starting for the East as the designated hitter, Quantrill will be the first pitcher to take the hill, and Caputo will serve as a reserve third baseman.

Carroll's selection was due in part to a team-leading .346 batting average and .500 on-base percentage. He has reached base safely in 32 of 54 plate appearances (.593 OBP), and over that stretch is 17-for-39 (.436 average), with a home run, 15 walks, seven RBI, 15 runs, a double and four stolen bases.

Caputo leads the Marlins in home runs (four), RBI (17), extra-base hits (eight), total bases (39) and is second in hits (23). His .280 average is third on the team among players with 35 or more at bats. He currently holds the team-high for most RBI in a game with seven, and most home runs in a game with two, both of which came on June 24 against Wilson. Caputo's four home runs are tied for second most in the CPL.

Quantrill has started two games for Morehead City this season, and has pitched extremely well in both. On June 26, in the first game of a doubleheader against Edenton, Quantrill threw four perfect innings against the first-place Steamers en route to his first win of the season. On July 2 against Peninsula, Quantrill ended the Pilots' seven-game winning streak with a six-inning effort in which he allowed just a run on five hits while striking out 11. Those 11 strikeouts were the most for Quantrill in 19 starts combined with the Marlins and with Stanford, and they were also the most for any Marlins' pitcher this year. Quantrill has a 2-0 record, .90 ERA, .70 WHIP, 15 strikeouts, and a .143 opponents batting average in 10 innings of work. He also started the CPL Select Game against Team USA, and struck out three in two innings of work.

The CPL All-Star game will take place on July 14 at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City, while the CPL Home Run Derby and All-Star Fan Fest will be the day before, on July 13.
