LAFAYETTE, LA -- The Mississippi RiverKings rallied with three goals in the third period to beat the Louisiana IceGators, 3-1, Wednesday night at the Cajundome in Louisiana. It was the first time the RiverKings overcame a deficit when trailing after the second period, improving to 1-4-0 in such situations.
After a scoreless first period the IceGators struck late in the second period. With Matt Whitehead in the penalty box the IceGators converted on the power play. Jeremy Boyer poked in a rebound past RiverKings goalie Peter Di Salvo with 1:45 to play in the second for the game's first goal. Kirk Byczynski and Shawn McNeil got the assists.
The RiverKings finally got on the board over halfway through the third period and it came just moments after a successful penalty kill. Leo Thomas, who was in the box, was released just as the puck came in front of the penalty box. He nudged it to Matt Harrington, who streaked in on a breakaway and beat Andrew Flemming over his glove to even the score at one with 6:58 left. Just 1:23 later, Thomas gave the RiverKings their first lead. He started the play by forcing a takeaway in the RiverKings defensive zone with a big hit. He took the puck through the neutral zone and at the left circle he cut to the middle and shot one past Flemming.
The RiverKings survived an IceGators power play late in the third and then Whitehead, who turned 30 today, sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 27 seconds left.
Di Salvo won his fourth straight start, improving to 4-1-0 by making 22 saves.
Notes: This is the first time in 2014-15 that the RiverKings overcame a third period deficit. It's also the first time the IceGators lost when leading after two periods, falling to 6-1-0...
