Daytona Beach Thunder News Release

DELAND, Fla. -- The Daytona Beach Thunder cut three players Wednesday night as the World Indoor Football League concluded its second day of full contact practice.

RB Daniel Bartow, LB Brad Shea and K Dakel Vardi turned in their playbooks. The Thunder must trim its roster to 25 before next week's season opener against the Augusta Spartans. Wednesday night was an opportunity for the defense to talk its smack. The defense topped the offense, convincingly, in a full-contact scrimmage scenario. But head coach Leon Bright wasn't all too shocked to see this happen.

"This defense looked stronger than the offense today, as they have all season up to this point," Bright said. "Later down the line, the offense will catch-up. No worries, this is normal."

Other notes from Wednesday:

- DB Ryan McHugh pretty much summed up the night with one earth-rattling hit that jumpstarted the entire team. However, the offense did have a bright spot -- RB Willie Nielly, who pounded for yards play after play and persevered.

"That man really played hard tonight, he ran hard, fast and often," Bright said of Nielly.

- OL Thomas Moody, an all-league offensive lineman and former Florida starter, took reps on defense.

- Former B-CC quarterback Lawrence McCloud is also working out at wide receiver, giving the Thunder offense both a third option under center and depth in the receiving corps.

"He's an athlete," Thunder assistant coach Chad Rhodes said of McCloud.
