San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - Rallies were the theme of the evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium as the Surf Dawgs (14 - 21) rallied in the ninth, eleventh, and fourteenth inning to eventually turn back the Chico Outlaws (19-16) and win 10-9 in 14 innings.
Chico would get to starting pitcher Chris Gale in the first. After Jason Matteucci was retired, Bobby Gandolfo hit a triple. With Gandolfo on third, Desi Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Gandolfo. After half an inning, it was 1-0 Chico.
In the bottom half, the leadoff hitter Adam Mandel, who went 4-7 with a triple and scored four of the ten Surf Dawgs runs, got it started with a single. Seth Pietsch would hit a routine grounder to second that was bobbled by Gandolfo and Mandel moved to third while Pietsch reached on the error. With Scott Goodman at the plate, Robert Anaya threw over to check on Pietsch and ended up throwing the ball away, which allowed Mandel to score and tie the game. Tony Garcia would then reach on another throwing error by Anaya and Pietsch scored to make it 2-1 Dawgs.
A back and forth game led to a 6-5 deficit heading into the ninth. Matt Maloney, who has been clutch as of late, doubled in the ninth. He moved to third on a past ball and the tying run was ninety feet from home with no outs. Kevin Ciarrachi then hit a sacrifice fly to score Maloney to tie the game.
In the top of the 11th, Chico would score the go-ahead run and San Diego was once again down to their final three outs. Maloney drew a walk to start the bottom of the 11th and then Victor Roldan singled down the right field line to put runners at the corners for Ciarrachi. Ciarrachi would strike out and that brought up Mandel. Mandel would hit what looked like a double play ball but Todd Gossage threw too high to second and Maloney would score to tie the game.
Neither team would score again until the 14th inning when Chico scored two runs. Jesse Kovacs singled to start the inning and was moved over by Jason Matteucci on a sacrifice bunt. Gandolfo would strike out and then with two outs reliever Joe Safken intentionally walked Desi Wilson. Mike Mallory would step up and double off of the left field wall to score Kovacs and Wilson to make it 9-7 Outlaws.
The never quit Surf Dawgs got the rally going again in the bottom of the 14th. Mandel singled, Johnny Day walked and Matt Connolly reached on an infield single. Goodman came up and hit a single to right to once again tie the game at nine. After Garcia struck out swinging, Nick Guerra hit a fly to right field that was deep enough to score Matthew Connolly and the Surf Dawgs won it 10-9.
San Diego and Chico will go at it again tomorrow with left-handed pitcher Steve Smyth (1-0) going for the Surf Dawgs and Nick Singleton (4-3) will throw for the Outlaws. First pitch is at 6:05 PT.
