Cleveland Gladiators News Release
CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Gladiators coaching staff came away with two postseason honors, the Arena Football League Office announced at the AFL Awards Ceremony tonight in Cleveland. Gladiators head coach Steve Thonn was named NET10 Wireless Marcum-Moss Head Coach of the Year, while assistant head coach Ron Selesky earned NET10 Wireless Assistant Coach of the Year honors.
The pair guided Cleveland to the most significant turnaround in AFL history, going from a 4-14 record in 2013 to an AFL-record 17-1 in 2014. The Gladiators strung together a franchise-best nine straight wins to kick off the 2014 season and finished the regular season a perfect 9-0 at home.
Cleveland also earned a reputation for dramatic wins this past season, collecting nine victories by a touchdown or less, with six wins coming on the final play of the game. Preaching a motto of "1-0" all season, Thonn and Selesky have led the Gladiators to their first-ever ArenaBowl appearance and a win away from the city of Cleveland's first major professional championship in 50 years.
The NET10 Wireless Marcum-Moss Head Coach of the Year award is named for two of the patriarchs of the Arena Football League, Hall of Fame coaches Tim Marcum and Perry Moss. Lynn Marcum, wife of the late coach Tim Marcum, formally presented the award to Thonn at the AFL Awards Ceremony at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday night.
ArenaBowl XXVII between the Gladiators and Arizona Rattlers is set to kickoff at 8:00 p.m. ET from Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland this Saturday, August 23 on ESPN.
