Thompson, Gilbert and Aguilar Named OurSports Central USFL Players of the Week

Houston Gamblers running back Mark Thompson, Pittsburgh Maulers cornerback Mark Gilbert and Philadelphia Stars kicker Luis Aguilar were named the OurSports Central United States Football League Offensive Player, Defensive Player and Unsung Hero of the Week, respectively, for week five of the USFL season.

Thompson carried the ball 16 times for 78 yards and three touchdowns in the Gamblers' 27-20 victory over the Birmingham Stallions. Since he returned to the lineup after missing the first two weeks to injury, the Gamblers are a perfect 3-0, and he's rolled up 293 yards and eight rushing touchdowns.

Thompson ran through, over and around the Birmingham defense:

Honorable mention goes to Pittsburgh Maulers quarterback Troy Williams who completed 15 of 19 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while adding 59 rushing yards and another score in the Maulers' 23-7 domination of the Michigan Panthers.

Defensively, Gilbert finished with two tackles, one interception, and five passes defensed in the Maulers' dominant defensive performance over the Panthers which included four turnovers.

Gilbert played college football at Duke and took the field in eight games for the Detroit Lions in 2021. He signed with the Maulers on March 25th.

Michigan Panthers defensive end Breeland Speaks earned honorable mention with six total tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Stars kicker Luis Aguilar connected on a game-winning, 55-yard field goal with no time left in the Philadelphia Stars' 24-21 triumph over the New Jersey Generals. He connected on a record eight field goals for all the Stars' points.

In his first season with Philadelphia, Aguilar played college football at Northern Arizona.
